HL Social Media Tips: How to Know When to Post on Facebook

Repeat after me – “I am a Facebook QUEEN.” You might not know it yet, but it’s true. When I first started managing social media for a startup based out of Chicago, I had to tell myself the same thing. Why? Because Facebook (for businesses) terrified me.

Maybe you can relate. It’s one thing to scroll through Facebook in a vegetative state as you’re dogging the walk. But it’s a whole other thing to use Facebook as a tool to grow your brand/business. There’s so much involved – scheduling posts, when to schedule posts, creating relatable and consistent content, and let’s not forget the horrid three letter “A word” –

… Ads.

Deep breaths. There’s a whole lot to chew so take small bites. This week’s tip is focused on WHEN to publish your posts to “the book.”

Insights → Posts → VOILA!

You can create a really awesome post, but if no one sees it, what’s the point? Here’s how to fix that:

  1. Open up your business page on Facebook. On the top of the page you’ll see a list of tabs (Page, Messages, Notifications, Insights, Publishing Tools).
  2. Click on “Insights.” and you’ll see “Overview” on the left side of your screen.
  3. Below “Overview” is the tab, “Posts.” Click that bad-boy.

You are now looking at the times of day when your fans are online. Think that’s cool? Hover over each day to see when exactly your fans are most engaged (or not) on Facebook. This way,  you know when is the best time to post your content and connect with your followers.

In general, it’s always good to follow the “Quality > Quantity” rule. Instead of committing to a post a day, choose the days that show the most traffic (in my experience, I’ve always noticed this happens on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays).

And for the love of the Facebook Gods, make sure your content is QUEEN:

Quick – Is your copy short and sweet?

Useful – Everyone loves (and needs) help. Offer up tricks of (your) trade!

Engaging – Always include photos. Or even better – videos and GIFs!

Enjoyable – Help your fans find a smile in their day and post positive things like inspiring quotes and/or photos of Pugs (Pugs are always relevant).

Natural – Is your post authentically you? Your fans might be following a company page, but no one likes to talk to a robot (unless that robot is a Pug robot). Post your heart out!
